Don’t be misled by the common shorthand name, “legal writing.” The Legal Analysis, Writing, & Research classes at Rutgers Law are a cornerstone for budding attorneys. Master skills in precise legal writing, in-depth research, and building compelling arguments. Find these classes on both our Camden and Newark campuses.

On the Camden campus, this course is known as Legal Analysis, Writing & Research (LAWR). On the Newark campus, it’s known as Legal Analysis, Writing & Research Skills (LAWRS). Regardless of your campus choice, you'll receive the same six-credit course and top-tier instruction.

Course Details

LAWR/LAWRS is a full-year course. It consists of a three-credit course in the fall and another three-credit course in the spring.

A Holistic Approach

From the first class to graduation, our program will prepare you to effectively and ethically represent your clients. We call this the “Orientation to Graduation” approach. Our LAWR/LAWRS course is no exception. During this course, professors collaborate with other faculty to align goals with clinics, moot court, skills courses, pro bono programs, and more.

Classes also have a lower student-teacher ratio than most first-year classes. These small class sizes provide you with personalized attention and individual benefits.

The Curriculum

Fall courses focus on investigatory legal and factual research and client communications. Spring courses focus on persuasive writing and oral advocacy on behalf of the client. During these courses you will:
- Draft legal memoranda, client letters, and briefs.
- Complete oral and written exercises to improve your writing and analytical skills.
- Participate in simulation exercises, such as mock client interviews and negotiations.
- Work one-on-one with your professor.
