Spanish for Legal Professionals

Spanish is one of the most extensively used languages in the world and across America. In New Jersey over 1.4 million people speak Spanish at home across over 588,000 households. Of those 1.4 million people, over 600,000 (44.6%) speak English less than “very well.” (data from United States Census Bureau)

This reality presents a challenge for attorneys and other legal professionals who find themselves needing to communicate with their clients in Spanish but do not possess the professional bilingualism to do so.

To address this challenge, Rutgers Law School offers a Spanish for Legal Professionals program to support legal professionals in improving their Spanish proficiency. Led by law school faculty and practicing legal professionals, this program uses simulations, exercises, and discussions to broaden vocabulary, strengthen grammar, and build skills for conducting interviews and working effectively with interpreters.

Spanish for Legal Professionals is currently offered by group enrollment. To offer this program to a group of your employees or to stay up to date about future versions of this program offered to individual participants, contact lawprograms@law.rutgers.edu for more information.
