Part-Time J.D. Program

Rutgers Law School is committed to offering a flexible curriculum that meets the needs of working professionals, caregivers, and students with long commutes. Learn more about our hybrid, part-time J.D. program.

At Rutgers Law, we believe in making legal education accessible to all. We proudly offer a hybrid, part-time J.D. program for evening students. Our university’s part-time program ranked 15th among all law schools and 7th among public law schools in the U.S. News & World Report in 2023.

For our part-time program, we primarily use a combination of in-person and remote instruction for our courses. We have scheduled courses in a way where:

  • You will be on campus two nights a week (primarily) for in-person instruction and
  • You will have remote instruction up to two times a week.

Our program offers flexibility for individuals balancing work, caregiving, or lengthy commutes. The program fully complies with the American Bar Association accreditation standards, and you may sit for any Bar Exam in the country. Two in-person nights a week (primarily) allows you to get the same quality degree from Rutgers Law School without delaying your career goals.
Note: The part-time day program in Camden does not involve hybrid courses.

Your Part-Time Learning Experience

Program Duration and Times

It will take you 3.5-4.5 years to complete the law program if you study part time. Evening classes are available during the week, Monday through Thursday. For your first three terms, classes typically meet after 6 p.m. 3-4 nights per week. To reduce the length of the program, check out our summer and winter sessions.

Program Requirements

When attending as a part-time student, you are scheduled for 10.5 credits of core classes each semester. After the first year, a minimum of 8 credits must be completed each semester, and students may transfer freely between the full-time and part-time programs. In Camden, one summer session is required to meet the 84-credit hour requirement for graduation. Click to learn more about the summer session.
