The Architecture of Desire: How the Law Shapes Interracial Intimacy and Perpetuates Inequality

Professor Maldonado will discuss how the law influences our most personal and private choices – who we desire and choose as intimate partners – and the psychological, economic, and social effects of these choices. She examines how romantic preferences, as shaped by the legacy of anti-miscegenation laws, segregation, and discriminatory immigration rules, along with current policies and practices—including exclusionary zoning, the K-12 public school assignment system, and spatial segregation—perpetuate racial inequality in our society.
